Controls in the classroom!

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, is committed to promoting development through investments in education and the advancement of knowledge in the region. He is particularly passionate about the educational and healthcare sectors, striving to ensure that the UAE remains at the forefront of innovative healthcare development. The MRBU Medical University, launched in 2014, is dedicated to impacting lives and shaping the future of health through the integration of care, learning, and discovery.

Creation is proud to be associated with MBRU through the supply, testing, and commissioning of the lighting control system in levels 2 and 3 at Al Jalila Foundation (AJF) Building.

Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) is a distinguished medical university situated in the emirate of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The university offers ten accredited undergraduate and postgraduate degrees through its three colleges: Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dental Medicine, the College of Medicine, and the College of Nursing and Midwifery. MBRU is an integral part of the Dubai Academic Health Corporation, representing Dubai’s first integrated academic health system.

Creation was entrusted with the supply, testing, and commissioning of the Lighting Control System on levels 2 and 3 inside AJF Building. These areas encompass classrooms, auditoriums, meeting rooms, collaboration rooms, etc. The specified requirement was for a fully DALI-based dimming control system, aiming to:
  • generate desired scenes
  • use motion sensors to control light intensity, automatically turning off lights to conserve energy.

The dimming control system was designed as scene-level-based, with three zones of DALI light grouping implemented in classrooms and auditoriums to meet client zone requirements. Keypads were installed for each zone separately. As classrooms are divided by partitions, automatic keypad function changes were implemented using partition sensors. The keypad’s functionality adjusts based on whether the partitions are open or closed.

The lighting control system in the meeting room has been integrated with the AV system to control lights through the AV smartphone application. This application automatically triggers a low brightness mood scene when a presentation or screening starts.

Some of the major Lutron products utilized in the project include the Athena Edge processor, Energi Savr Node DALI unit, QS Sensor module, Pico wireless control, and the GRX-IRPS infrared transmitter/receiver pair

Smart lighting at academic institutions

Light significantly influences mood, with cool daylight white promoting attention, while warm light inspires and relaxes. Biodynamic lighting, by adapting to the human rhythm throughout the day, supports learning and regeneration. Smart luminaires contribute to a sustainable and efficient lighting system through state-of-the-art technologies. Intelligent sensor technology coordinates natural lighting conditions with artificial light, creating a harmonious blend. A presence-controlled lighting system further enhances energy savings.

In an educational institution, lighting plays a crucial role in creating a secure environment and shaping a space where students can navigate comfortably, feel a sense of belonging, and enjoy the learning experience.
